The Swiss physiotherapy association has six staff employees and a full time employed managing director. The association holds executive meetings every 6 weeks and furthers liasions with other health care professions and authorities. The association is member of a trade union.

INFORMATION AND NUMBERS

 
 
 

The Swiss association has their own education department.

There are 14 physiotherapy schools in the country with 300 students per year. The education results in an academic degree/diploma after 4 years of studies ( 6.000 hrs). Studies allow for postgraduate courses.

Switzerland has recognition of physiotherapy specialists. Physiotherapists are involved in teaching as well as research.

TITLE AND REGULATIONS ON THE PROFESSION

 
 
 

Professional Title/ Qualification:

Diplomierter Physiotherapeut (SRK Anerkennung)

The title and the professional activity is protected by the state. The rules of professional conduct are determined directly by the state through national legislation. The physiotherapist must be state registrated and obtain a licence to practice. Switzerland has established a code of ethics for physiotherapists.

The national authority responsible for the physiotherapy profession in Switzerland is the SRK (Schweizerisches Rotes Kreuz). There are sufficient employment opportunities for physiotherapists in the country.

INSURANCE AND
PRACTICE REGULATIONS

 
 
 

The physiotherapy services in Switzerland are not determined by the profession. The physiotherapist determines the clinical intervention of physiotherapy him/herself.

Switzerland offers both private and public physiotherapy services. The insurance cover for physiotherapy is paid both through the national health care system and privately the patient.

The Swiss association has established a twinning program with Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein to a yearly budget of 2.500 Euro. No governmental or EU funding has been obtained.
