INFORMATION AND NUMBERS

The Norwegian association has their own education department.

There are 5 physiotherapy schools in the country graduating about 300 students per year. Physiotherapy education in Norway is a 3-year diploma course at a physiotherapy college, and there is a mandatory one year of supervised clinical practice in addition. This is at the level of higher education and gives access to postgraduate physiotherapy education including Masters Degree.

Physiotherapists are involved in both teaching and research. Norway has recognition of physiotherapy specialists.

TITLE AND REGULATIONS ON THE PROFESSION

Professional Title/ Qualification:

Fysioterapeut

The title is protected by the state, but the professional activity is not. The rules of professional conduct are determined directly by the state through national legislation. The physiotherapist must be state registrated and obtain a licence to practice. Norway has established a code of ethics for physiotherapists.

The national authority responsible for the physiotherapy profession in Norway is "The National Health Department". The Norwegian association has noted (in March 2002) that a shortage of employment opportunities for physiotherapists is about to develop.

INSURANCE AND
PRACTICE REGULATIONS

The physiotherapy services in Norway are determined by the profession. The physiotherapist determines the clinical intervention of physiotherapy him/herself. Norway offers both public and private physiotherapy services. The insurance cover for physiotherapy is combined between the national health care system and private insurances.
