BELGIUM

There have been two types of physiotherapy training in Belgium: a diploma course of 3 years' duration and a degree course of 4 years' duration divided into two cycles. Proposals for changes to the system for physiotherapy education are pending.

The physiotherapy qualification leads to an academic degree (diploma) and allows for postgraduate education at university level. Physiotherapists are involved in both teaching and research but there is no recognition of physiotherapy specialists.

It should be noted that there are both French and Flemish authorities to consider the academic recognition of diplomas.

The association does not have their own education department.

The title and the professional activity is protected by the state. The rules of professional conduct are determined directly by the state through national legislation. Belgium does not require a registration or licence to practice and has no code of ethics for physiotherapists.

The national authority responsible for the physiotherapy profession in Belgium is the Ministry of Health.

Since there is no limit to the number of physiotherapists who undergo training and qualify in Belgium, employment opportunities may be limited. There is also a national limit to the number of physiotherapists who can obtain social security re-imbursement for physiotherapy services.

The physiotherapy services are determined by the profession and the phyiotherapist determine the clinical intervention of physiotherapy him/herself. Belgium offers only private physiotherapy services. The insurance cover for physiotherapy is paid both through the national health care system and privately the patient.

The Belgian Association has established a twinning program with a Bulgarian association to an estimated yearly cost of 1.985 Euro. No governmental or EU funding.
